A young man sets out on the tracks of his ancestors. They left Greece for Alexandria, where they ran a patisserie that was famed throughout the Levant. Forced to leave Egypt at short notice, they ended up in exile in Switzerland. The legacy of a proud tradition of the confectioner’s art was encapsulated in a legendary recipe book—but no one seems to know quite where it is. The narrator’s odyssey takes him through a series of Mediterranean seaports; detailed descriptions of the towns’ fragrances and the intricacies of pastries and other delicacies play a major role in an almost incidental story of romance and separation.
